This stunning piece, Francis, is from my Feathery February collection, where I celebrate the beauty and diversity of Australian birds. Francis measures 20cm x 20cm and is painted on a cradled wooden panel with a width of 3.8cm. This allows for versatile display options—you can stand it up on a shelf or hang it on a wall using the attached wire. The sides are painted, providing a polished, unframed look.
I used thick oil paint and palette knives to create rich textures in the Francis’ feathers and the background. This technique brings the painting to life, adding depth and dimension that invites you to explore every detail. I painted a pair of finches to give a sense of companionship and to reflect the natural behaviour of these delightful birds. The partner piece to Francis is Faith, also available on my website.
The Inspiration
The Gouldian Finch is renowned for its striking colours. Approximately 75% of these finches have black faces, with 25% having red faces, and on rare occasions, you might even find a yellow-faced one. These vibrant birds hold a special place in my heart because my Dad used to breed finches when I was a child. Our backyard aviary was filled with a variety of finches, creating many cherished memories for me.
